Couples wishing to be married in Ontario must complete an application form signed by both individuals getting married. The application with supporting documents listed below must be submitted in person by the bride and/or groom. The bride and/or groom is requested to wait while the licence is being processed.

The marriage licence application must show your "last legal name before this marriage". To determine the legal name of a woman who has been previously divorced the following rules are applicable: Married before April 1, 1987 - Assumed husband's surname and intends for this to be a change in her legal identity, then the married name is her legal name. Married on or after April 1, 1987 - A name assumed on or after April 1, 1987 can only be an alias unless an application was made for a name change. The legal name would then be the name on the change of name certificate or birth certificate. In all other instances, the Legal name is the name shown on the birth certificate unless a change of name certificate is provided.

Visit the Ontario Ministry of Consumer and Business Services for details on remarrying after a foreign divorce.

A marriage licence is valid for use anywhere in Ontario for a period of three (3) months from the date of issue.

Haldimand County provides the service of solemnizing civil marriages subject to the following parameters:
- Civil marriages will be conducted at the Haldimand County Administration Building, 45 Munsee Street, Cayuga. A maximum of two ceremonies may be scheduled for any regular business day between the hours of 9:00am and 3:30pm.
- A choice of the
standard civil marriage ceremony or an
optional ceremony, incorporating all mandatory declarations, will be used*. Personal vows in addition to the mandatory declarations will be permitted.
- Prior consultation, with the staff member who will be conducting the ceremony, is required. This meeting will include a tour of the room where the ceremony will take place, a review of the ceremony and requirements pertaining to the ceremony. The couple will be required to bring their marriage licence to this consultation**. The fee to perform a civil marriage ceremony, $255.15 ($243.00 + $12.15 GST), will be collected at this time.
- If there are reasonable grounds to believe a person lacks the capacity to marry, by reason of being mentally ill or mentally defective ***, a letter shall be required from a physician, parent or guardian as to the mental competency of the party.
- The solemnizer has the authority to refuse to perform a marriage ceremony if anyone in the wedding party (being the bride, groom and witnesses) appears to be under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
- Witnesses for the purpose of signing the Registry of Marriage, must be 14 years of age or older. Proof of age may be required.
- A maximum of eight (08) individuals may attend the civil ceremony, comprised of the wedding party and guests.
- Pictures may be taken during the signing of the Registry and the service may be video taped discreetly.
- A flower arrangement or other appropriate decoration may be placed in the room.
- Reaffirmation of vows will not be offered as part of this service.
- Fee - $274.59 ($243.00 + $31.59 HST)
